A Fusion of Tradition and Modern Interior Design
At Fusion Interior Design, we pride ourselves on creating spaces that reflect both functionality and character. Our latest project at Box Hill School, a distinguished educational institution in Surrey, is a perfect example of how thoughtful interior design can enhance both aesthetics and usability.
We’ve been tasked with refurbishing two key areas: the Headmaster’s formal meeting room and his working office. These spaces not only serve as professional environments but also need to embody the school’s unique ethos—one that blends academic excellence with personal growth, confidence, and community.
Understanding the Vision
During our initial consultation, it became clear that we weren’t bound by traditional interior styles. While the school has deep historical roots and stunning architectural details, our design needed to reflect the progressive values of The Round Square, an educational framework that fosters leadership, responsibility, and internationalism.
By carefully listening to the Headmaster’s vision, we aimed to create an environment that would inspire students and staff alike. The challenge was to craft interiors that respected the school’s Victorian heritage while introducing contemporary elements to support a dynamic learning and working atmosphere.
Honouring History with a Modern Touch
Box Hill School’s main building, constructed in 1883, is a striking blend of Mock Tudor and Gothic Revival architecture. Inside, the rooms boast ornate wood panelling, intricate stained glass windows, and hand-painted tiles—features that add immense character but also present design challenges.
One of the biggest considerations was lighting. Fully wood-panelled rooms including the ceilings, while visually stunning, tend to absorb natural light, creating a dim and sometimes oppressive atmosphere. Our solution? Collaborating with lighting engineers to ensure the right balance of brightness and warmth.
Custom Lighting for a Functional and Inviting Space
To maintain the room’s historic charm while improving functionality, we sourced three bespoke, traditional-style 18-arm pendants from a British manufacturer. These elegant fixtures, finished in bright chrome, introduce a contemporary twist while maintaining a sense of grandeur fitting for a school steeped in tradition.
The choice of LED bulbs was crucial—not only for their energy efficiency but also for their ability to provide a bright, well-lit environment essential for meetings and daily operations. The micro-chipped technology in these LEDs ensures maximum efficiency while reducing the school’s carbon footprint.
Design Considerations for the Headmaster’s Office & Meeting Room
Beyond lighting, we focused on several other key design elements:
1. Space Planning: We carefully arranged furniture to optimise both comfort and functionality. The meeting room layout promotes engaging discussions, while the Headmaster’s office allows for a productive workflow.
2. Colour and Material Selection: To counterbalance the darker wood panelling, we introduced lighter textiles and contemporary furniture with sleek lines. A refined palette of deep greens, warm neutrals, and subtle metallic accents bridges classic and modern design elements.
3. Bespoke Furniture Solutions: High-quality, handcrafted furniture pieces were chosen to reflect the school’s prestige while offering durability and comfort for everyday use.
4. Artwork and Accessories: Carefully curated artwork and accessories add personality to the space while subtly reinforcing the school’s values and heritage.
